US envoy for the Western Balkans Gabriel Escobar has stated that Kosovo cannot unilaterally withdraw from the Brussels agreements.

Speaking to Serbian television on Wednesday, the US envoy noted that the Brussels agreements are “legally binding agreements between Serbia, Kosovo and the European Union. For us, this is an obligation because we have been supporting this process, and no political party can withdraw from it unilaterally.”

“Serbian municipal groupings in Kosovo will be formed, and we are looking for options to realize this idea,” he said, adding that this would happen “immediately.”

The Brussels agreements to normalize relations between Belgrade and Pristina, signed in 2013, provide for the establishment of the Serbian Municipal Community, which will be an autonomous organ for Serbs in the region that has unilaterally declared its secession from Serbia.

The Serbian president demands the implementation of this clause of the agreements, stating that Serbia has fulfilled its obligations, and accuses the Kosovo authorities of obstructing this process.

This comes against the backdrop of tensions between Albanians and Serbs in the province of Kosovo, where Kosovo police tried to take control of election commissions in Serb-majority areas of the province, sparking protests from the population.
